Featuring Claire Louise
Meet Claire Bamford, a member of The Sleep Nanny consultant team;
Tell us a little bit about yourself;
I am Claire and I live in St Ives, Cambridgeshire. I live with my husband and our little girl, Carys who is just coming up to 2 years old. Carys is a cheeky, alert little girl who fills my day with excitement but filled them with exhaustion when she didn’t sleep well as a baby.
Why do you want to help sleepless families?
I unfortunately suffered with post natal anxiety when Carys was about 5 months old. One of the main causes of this was the sleep deprivation I was experiencing. I used the Sleep Nanny and within a couple of weeks Carys was sleeping through and it completely changed our world and I was well and enjoying life as a Mummy again. The day I realised things were better, I remember saying to my husband “I would love to do that job”. I wanted to help people in the same way the sleep nanny had helped us and I completely understand what families may be experiencing which gives me the drive to help them in the best way I can.
Describe your approach to ‘sleep training’
I have extensive experience in children’s safeguarding and understand how important it is to have secure attachments between parents and children and my plans are gentle and supportive to make sure these attachments are maintained.
Do you have any particular areas of specialism?
I have been lucky enough to work with babies and toddlers and have lots of experience with little ones under 2.
What are your top 3 sleep tips for parents?
When trying to support your little ones with their sleep, I would always recommend…
- Consistency, consistency and more consistency
- A good solid routine to give your little one cues it’s bedtime
- The right amount of day time sleep to prevent your little one from being over tired
In your experience, what are the most common mistakes parents make?
I don’t think parents make mistakes as such, rather they fall into the trap of doing what ever is needed for those all important 40 winks which often leads to negative sleep associations.
What would you say to someone who is afraid that nothing can help them in their situation?
It’s natural to feel nervous and worried as it’s something new to you but you’re getting the support and knowledge, not just from me, but the whole sleep nanny team, so there isn’t a problem out there that we cannot help with.
What do you love about your job?
I love seeing the positive impacts on families lives. I have had families who are now well rested and happy as well as families who are now confident to go away on holiday without dreading being exhausted and little ones who are eating better during the day now they’re not drinking ounces of unneeded milk all night. Every family is different and every family benefits in different ways but seeing the changes are so rewarding and it’s what I strive for in every case.
