Meet Hayley Firman, a member of The Sleep Nanny consultant team;

Tell us a little bit about yourself;

My name is Hayley Firman, I am based in Lichfield (Midlands) although I work all over the place!  I lived in Vietnam for many years and got married there too.  We now have our beamingly beautiful boy Milo who is 2 years old and a serious Ed Sheeran fan 😊

Why do you want to help sleepless families?

I am motivated by lots of things in my own life, my son, my husband, my love of travel- although my real urge and passion is to help others!  I know first-hand how life altering and isolating sleep deprivation can be and after working with my own Sleep Consultant I can no longer keep this amazing process to myself (we are still reaping the rewards of our experience 12 months on!).  My life now is calm(er) and balanced, allowing me the opportunity to be ME as well as Mommy.  Paying this experience forward to others, getting them the sleep they need and seeing their families flourish is the real reason I am here.

Describe your approach to ‘sleep training’

Although gentle and reassuring I am definitely motivational and dynamic in my approach.  I like to keep the plan energised and moving forward with a clear eye on our sleep goals.  Providing an experienced and holistic plan for my families takes into account their situation, sibling needs and learning styles – this is essential for success.  Recent feedback from my families describe me as ‘confident, calm and constructive offering no judgment, a depth of sleep knowledge and a friendly face.’  Differentiation is at the forefront of my approach, each and every little one is different and their needs can be met most effectively using a carefully designed bespoke approach.  I spend a lot of time building a sleep plan that fits with my families, then coaching them through this plan with gentle baby steps.  I am positive, open minded and non-judgmental but will also hold you accountable to the plan.

Do you have any particular areas of specialism?

I worked as a teacher prior to having my own Sleep Nanny business, specialising in Psychology, Health and Social Care and Adult Motivation – all things that are now the building blocks to my successes as a Sleep Nanny.  I am also trained in Mentoring and Managing Children’s Nutrition – something that can be closely interlinked with sleep and its challenges.

What are your top 3 sleep tips for parents?

1.  Every child is different – don’t think just because something worked for your niece or neighbour’s child it will for yours. Bespoke sleep plans are built to meet the needs of beautifully different little ones.

2.  Sleep Breeds Sleep – The more your little one has the more they will want! Limiting naps and delaying bedtimes will only compact sleep challenges.

3.  Do what works for you but be consistent with it – if co-sleeping is your choice, or dummies work in your house then great but be prepared to consistently give this response to your child as a sleep aid.

In your experience, what are the most common mistakes parents make?

I have made all of the same mistakes as a parent myself – it’s only with time and training have I learnt these things are counter intuitive to sleep. Here’s my 3 avoiders……

1. Letting little one get over tired at all (by limiting naps/ late bed times).

2. Inconsistency with where little one sleeps (bed hopping) can confuse the sleepy time message.

3. Putting little one down asleep.  A brilliant tip is to put them down awake so they can begin to feel independent and secure in their own sleep space.

What would you say to someone who is afraid that nothing can help them in their situation?

Believe me I have been there – I felt the exact same thing when I started this journey as a parent. Every child needs and essentially wants sleep it is just a skill that we as parents can gently teach little ones; not something they are immediately born able to do.  Take action today and trust in my experience and my success rate and believe that within 2 weeks we will have this sleep challenge sorted.

What do you love about your job?

I love everything about my job as a Sleep Nanny, I am a real people person so it is important that I am reaching out and motivating others.  I love seeing the process unravel and families thrive on their sleep plan. Knowing that fast and life changing results are just around the corner – it’s very exciting! I love how family friendly and flexible being a ‘Momtrepreneur’ is for my family too.  At the end of the day; time is precious and if we are sleep deprived or your family is not happy then nothing is right! I think we can all appreciate that.
